Johnson Had To Have Lived Through These Times And It Shows With the Way The Stories Go. In the author's own words in the book's introduction, "these stories are not at all like the novels I'm writing". That is a good thing because this book of 10 short stories and an 11th with 4 chapters was pretty depressing. The intro warns that some stories deal with spousal/and or child abuse. It is not overly gruesome but after awhile the reading becomes tiresome. I cannot honestly say I remember one story fondly!

Varied short stories about life in the south. True to life. Some are a tale of a time when such things were commonplace or not unusual as compared to life in the present day. Really enjoyed reading this.
Wow! I was completely taken aback when reading these short stories. They are gut-wrenching, episodes that could truly happen in lives, although the author assures the reader that they are all fiction. Some are heart-warming feel good stories of relationships. Others are WOW, gut-wrenching, leaving the reader feeling very sad and sometimes mad. Although most of these stories take just a minute or two, my favorite was a short story comprised of a few chapters. Spoiler alert... it was a happy ending... but not without it's trials and hardships. This would be a great book to read a few of the stories aloud to an adult reading group for discussion. I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book, through Reading Deals, and I gave an honest review.
Great southern stories! It flows so well I read the whole thing in just a couple of hours. The stories seem too good to be fiction. Loved it!
I enjoyed all of the book. The best story of all was the one about the truck driver. The story about the children was interesting also.
This book of short stories was both interesting and comical. It is very well written and the stories seem to "speak to you." Great book and a very enjoyable read.
